History
Auburn University was established in 1856 as the East Alabama Male College, 20 years after the city of Auburn's founding. In 1872, under the Morrill Act, the school became the first land-grant college in the South and was renamed the Agricultural and Mechanical College of Alabama.
In 1899 the name again was changed, to the Alabama Polytechnic Institute. Finally, in 1960 the name of the school was changed to Auburn University, a title more in keeping with its location, and expressing the varied academic programs and larger curriculum of a major university.
Today, Auburn is one of the few universities to carry the torch as a land, sea and space grant university. Our Fall 2010 semester enrollment was 25,078. Our students can choose from more than 140 degree options in 13 schools and colleges at the undergraduate, graduate and professional levels.
Auburn University has developed into one of the largest universities in the South, remaining in the educational forefront with its traditional blend of arts and applied science, and changing with the needs of today while living with a respect for the traditions and spirit that are Auburn.

Hotel and Restaurant Management Program
Horst Schulze & Dean June Henton
Partnership with the Hotel at Auburn Univeristy
The Hotel and Restaurant Management Program debuted in 1987 as part of Auburn University’s Department of Nutrition, Dietetics, and Hospitality Management in the College of Human Sciences. At that time, Mr. Horst Schulze, already one of the most illustrious names in the hospitality industry, was introduced to the Dean of the College, Dr. June Henton. His admiration for her visionary leadership led him to accept her invitation for appointment as an advisory board member to the College and the Program. Schulze’s appointment signaled the start of a relationship that would grow to establish Auburn University’s HRMT program as one of the finest hospitality leadership and training programs in the world.
Through management of The Hotel at Auburn University & Dixon Conference Center, The Capella Hotel Group offers hotel-as-classroom instruction with Practicum Classes designed to provide hands-on experience in all facets of hotel and restaurant operation. Providing students both classroom theory and practical experience with a model of continuous quality improvement as a fundamental component of their degree requirements, The Hotel and Restaurant Management Program is preparing students to make their own way and define their own positions as the future “Global Leaders in the Service Business.”

The program offers more than a dozen excursions to a variety of cities and regions throughout Italy including multiple trips to Rome, the neighboring towns of the Castelli Romani, and the regions of Campania, Umbria and Tuscany to visit cities such as Pompeii, Assisi, and Florence.

The Hospitality Gala
Symbolized by the pineapple since American colonial times, hospitality is the key ingredient for students, graduates, and educators in Auburn Universitys Hotel and Restaurant Management (HRMT) program. We concentrate on service excellence, social and ethical responsibility and diversity in a practically oriented and intellectually challenging learning environment.
Since 1992, HRMT has staged a formal benefit dinner and silent auction as our annual signature event for the program. This year, we continue our tradition of excellence by hosting The Hospitality Gala under the direction of Dr. Alecia C. Douglas, Assistant Professor and Mr. Hans van der Reijden, Managing Director, of Hotel Operations & Educational Initiatives at The Hotel at Auburn University and Dixon Conference Center.
Guided by a team of experienced hotel professionals in management areas such as sales, marketing, catering, culinary, and operations, students effectively plan, organize, execute, and facilitate the event. Funds raised from the event support educational development initiatives for both HRMT students and faculty. Examples of initiatives include: student attendance at hospitality conferences and tradeshows, study tour programs, graduate student travel to research conferences, support for visiting professors and faculty development opportunities.
